Caring for individuals with dementia can pose significant challenges and can be a source of stress. Recognizing this, a vital research project is currently underway to enhance the emotional and physical well-being of caregivers for individuals with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. This research is funded by the National Institute on Aging, and you may have the opportunity to participate at no cost.
People Power, a technology company based in Silicon Valley, in collaboration with researchers at the University of California Berkeley, has developed a system aimed at improving the safety of individuals with dementia and mild cognitive impairment while also reducing the social isolation experienced by their caregivers.
The Presence Caregiver system effectively tracks daily activity patterns and promptly alerts caregivers, family members, and friends via text alerts about potential hazards such as falls, water leaks, and wandering. Importantly, the system has been designed to minimize the time and energy demands placed on caregivers.
With Presence Caregiver, you can benefit from various features that help ensure the well-being of your loved one:
<ul>
<li>Receive mobile alerts notifying you if someone wanders away from home, experiences a fall, or experiences changes in bathroom visit frequency.</li>
<li>Track current activities of occupants, including when the front door is opened, which room an occupant visited in the home, and when medication is accessed.</li>
<li>Gain a better understanding of rest and sleep patterns including bed and wake times, instances of leaving the bedroom at night, and sleep history and quality for improved health insights.</li>
<li>Enable support from family and friends by adding specific people to receive alerts, delegating helpful tasks to others, and coordinating contact with family and friends.</li>
<li>Improve safety at home with features like a wirelessly connected button to call for help, nightlights to prevent falls at night, and immediate alerts for water leaks or clogged toilets.</li>
<li>Utilize your Apple Health data to gain insights into your lifestyle habits, receive reminders to take breaks and engage in physical activity, and receive alerts if you or your loved ones wander away from home.</li>
<li>Participate in a caregiving community and connect with other caregivers to receive online advice, access useful resources such as videos, and coordinate in-person meetings.</li>
</ul>

<li>Do you own a smartphone?</li>
<li>Do you have Wi-Fi in your home?</li>
<li>Are you a family caregiver?</li>
<li>Has the person you care for received a diagnosis of dementia or mild cognitive impairment?</li>
</ol>
If you answered "yes" to these questions, you may qualify to participate in the research project and receive the People Power Caregiver Research Pack free of charge. Once qualified, a representative from the research team will promptly get in touch with you. Your system will be shipped to your home, and a customer service installation expert will schedule an appointment to guide you remotely through the setup process.
